Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall is one of Japan’s most iconic music venues. Since its opening in 1923 as Japan’s first full-scale open-air concert hall, countless artists have left their mark on its legendary stage, making it a veritable “Rock Hall of Fame.” In 2023, the year of its 100th anniversary, it was announced that the venue would be closed for renovation; however, it has now been decided that it will bring its long history to a close at the end of September 2025. Now, a video compilation capturing every moment of the closing party “SOUNDOFHISTORY—since 1923—,” produced by Char—who has deep ties to the Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall—will be released on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Char and the Open-Air Concert Hall—their relationship has resonated time and again over the course of a career spanning more than half a century. Ever since Char, then still a teenager, took the stage with Smoky Medicine—featuring Mari Kaneko, Yoshihiro Naruse, Shoji Fujii, and Jun Sato—this special venue has hosted countless performances, including the legendary rock trio Johnny, Louis \u0026amp; Char set a record attendance of 14,000 people at the free “Free Spirit” concert in July 1979, as well as the JL\u0026amp;C disbandment concert—it is a special venue where he has performed countless times. This “Sound of History—since 1923—” is a work that thoroughly documents the authentic final performance held at the Open-Air Concert Hall before its renovation. A highlight of this production is the collaboration with an all-star lineup of musicians who traveled from all over the world to perform.
