Mozart's K. 219 was a special piece for him. This CD is Shumsky's first recording of the piece. This must have been a long-awaited release for music fans of the time. The recordings from 4 to 10 are for RCA and feature a combination of popular singers and famous violists who were popular at the time. Four of the Rachmaninoff recordings are sung in English; 11-14 are solo recordings backed by orchestra; 11-13 have no known previous release history, but were reissued courtesy of Shumsky's associates. The odd one out is 13: Firestone, a tire manufacturer of yesteryear, used to offer a music program on radio and television, and Shumsky was for a time the concertmaster of the program's orchestra. This piece is a lyrical pop song composed by the wife of Firestone's founder.Together with the slightly sweet arrangement of 14, it conveys the atmosphere of mid-20th century America.
