Today, Pärt is often regarded as a \"healing composer,\" but in his early years of composing, he wrote neoclassical works. However, one day he almost lost the energy to write music, and the approach he took was to \"return to the roots of Western music. The music that came out of this process was all clad in simple garments, which Pärt called the \"tintinnabuli (bell voice) style,\" and from then on, a series of simple and beautiful works using this style were born. The four works on this album...the glorious \"Te Deum,\" conscious of the tradition from Charpentier and Bruckner; \"Pilgrim's Song,\" written using Psalm 121; and \"After the Victory,\" for the celebration of the anniversary of St. Ambrose's death. The \"Berlin Mass,\" so called because it was premiered in St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin on \"Catholics' Day,\" is a quiet piece written in the Tintinabuli style, and requires great care in performance. All the players, including Dijkstra, have a deep knowledge and respect for Pärt's sound world, and they express these works to perfection.
