Although his parents were not musicians, he grew up in a very musical household, with his father playing Armenian folk instruments; he moved to Moscow in 1938, where he studied piano at the Gnesin Music Academy with Elena Gnesina and in composition classes with Visarion Shevari. He became a member of the Union of Soviet Composers, supported by Khachaturian and Shostakovich, and graduated from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1948. He then returned to Armenia and devoted himself to the development of music in his homeland. He had many musician friends, notably the cellist Rostropovich, who was a great admirer of his music.
