During the golden age of the Republic of Poland-Lithuania, which united the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland, Poland was growing into one of the strongest countries in Europe. Culture flourished, and thanks to international relations with all of Europe, the arts were nurtured at court, and the latest music from faraway countries was played on all kinds of instruments and recorded for posterity in numerous manuscripts. One such manuscript, the Krasinski manuscript, is the most important musical testimony to the high culture of Poland and Lithuania.\n\n\n\nDuring the chaos of World War II, the Warsaw library collection was deliberately set on fire, destroying a large part of Poland's cultural heritage. The Krasinski manuscript miraculously escaped the fire because it had been brought to Germany as loot.
