The \"Songs of the Earth\" cycle of Mahler symphonies recorded by Jonathan Nott and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra from 2003 to 2011, featuring two tenors and a baritone, has been the talk of the town with each new release receiving praise from all quarters. The complete Mahler symphonies were later released in a boxed format, but only on discs No. 1 through No. 9. Since then, there have been some fans who have wondered what happened to the \"Songs of the Earth\". So finally, the long-awaited release of the \"Songs of the Earth\" is here. The recording was made in Bamberg in February 2016. Jonathan Nott also recorded \"Song of the Earth\" with the Vienna Philharmonic, but that was a replacement for the tenor Kaufmann, who sang the whole thing by himself. The vocal lineup in this Bamberg recording is the version with tenor and baritone singers, which was also used in the Bernstein \u0026amp; Vienna Philharmonic recording and has been done occasionally since then. At first listen, one senses the soft, aesthetic tone of the Bamberg Symphony. The sweet horns dripping like honey, the woodwind and string sections like the ultimate in sensuality. Nott carefully recreates the work's delicate chamber writing style while moving through the work with grace and intoxication.TUDOR's excellent recording technique is also worthy of special mention, and the detailed melodic patterns of each voice part are vividly captured. It is rare in recent years to find such a disc of this work, which describes the impermanence of life, performed in such a troubled, sensual, and aesthetic manner, far from the state of somberness. Tenor Roberto Sacca has performed with Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, Harding, and others, and made his debut at La Scala in Milan in 2015 and 2016 with \"Wozzeck\" (!). Baritone Stephen Gadd was awarded the Kathleen Ferrier Scholarship at the beginning of his career, and has since won top prizes in the Placido Domingo Opera Competition, and continues to perform at opera houses around the world. They are all singers who are at the peak of their powers. This is an excellent recording of TUDOR's SACD hybrid, SURROUND SOUND 5.1.
