Veronica Swift

Second Place Winner of the 2015 Thelonious Monk Vocal CompetitionA full-fledged debut from a legitimate/competent vocalist who has been featured on Benny Green's work as well as Wynton Marsalis and JALCO! Her father is Hod O'Brien and her mother is Stephanie Nakasian, 2nd place winner of the 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition. This is the first Mack Avenue release from Veronica Swift, a legitimate vocalist whose parents are Hod O'Brien and Stephanie Nakasian! So far, she has released works on the HodStef Music label, which bears her parents' names on the label. In Japan, her work titled "Loneley Woman" has been reissued and produced, and she has been featured in a piece by popular pianist Benny Green, and has won prizes in the Monk Competition. She has been listening to music naturally since she was a child, when her father and mother took her backstage to their shows. Her singing, which expands the world of the song with free scatting over swinging rhythms, is a thoroughbred. The fact that Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Chris Botti have invited her to be a featured vocalist is proof that she is a talented singer, but she also has a certain dignity and, at the same time, a natural, unpretentious charm. The performance of "I'm Hip," a swinging rendition of Bob Dorough and Dave Fishberg's trademark number, was a perfect conversation with Emmett Cohen's piano. The ballad "Confession" by Arthur Schwartz & Howard Dietz and "The Other Woman" by Nina Simone were sung together in a poignant manner that evokes the story of the characters in the song. Backed by a trio of pianists, Benny Green and Emmett Cohen, who is a permanent member of the group. While based on a four-beat swing feel, the 12 tracks include bluesy tunes, richly harmonized numbers, slow songs, and up-tempo tunes, offering a wide variety of singing. The album consists of 11 tracks by André Previn and other composers who have colored the history of jazz/popular music, as well as one original song. At only 25 years old, this is a singer we can look forward to seeing more of in the future, as she seems likely to follow in the footsteps of her senior Cecile McLorin Salvant, who won the Monk Competition in 2010.
