Such is the stubbornness of Martucci's beautiful orchestral works. A master pianist, conductor, and the most major Italian composer of the late 19th century, Martucci was one of the first to try to break away from the \"opera universalism\" of his time. As a conductor, he conducted the Italian premiere of \"Tristan und Isolde,\" but as a composer, he dared not to compose an opera, but instead composed a number of symphonies, concertos, and chamber music in an attempt to revive pure instrumental music. This Symphony No. 1 is a big work with a thick sound and hot swell, which sounds a bit like Brahms when you listen to it. The four pieces, which sound like songs, are also superb.
