However, his career collapsed with the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938, and he fled to the United States. In the U.S., he was introduced to film music by Hans Eisler, but due to differences in claims with the producers, he was never able to fully realize his talents. After his exile, he stopped composing lieder, but in the 1940s he turned his attention to Jewish music, composing the \"Hebrew Requiem\" dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. His \"Five Negro Spirituals\" was also composed during this period. The nearly 100 lieder composed during his Viennese period are melodically rich works in the late Romantic tradition, many of them dealing with themes of night, death, irony, and humor. Michelle DeYoung is a Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano. She is highly acclaimed for her singing of late Romantic works by Mahler and Wagner, as well as Bernstein's \"Jeremiah.
