A rare reissue CD is now available. Renée Schmay was born in 1887 in Boulogne-sur-Seine (now Boulogne-Billancourt), France. She studied at the Paris Conservatory, and upon graduation was selected as a soloist with the Orchestre de la Colonne, where her fame soon spread internationally. 1904, at the age of 17, Schmay auditioned for Henry Wood and won him over with her performance of Lalo's Spanish Symphony, and was selected for the Proms. The piece became her signature piece. In 1921, she performed Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3 at Carnegie Hall with Mengelberg conducting, and was acclaimed as the \"French Kreisler. Schmay visited Japan in 1932 to give a concert and also performed with koto player and composer Michio Miyagi. She also recorded his \"Spring Sea,\" which was very popular in Japan. However, she disappeared from the international music scene in 1938.She made sporadic radio appearances in Paris in the 1940s, but after that she almost retired, and little is known of her whereabouts. She passed away in 1977, just before her 90th birthday. Schmay's authorized recordings are concentrated between 1920 and 1926. The performance on this reissue is very powerful, and its propulsive, rapid, and passionate passages are sure to attract listeners 100 years after the recording. It is regrettable that only three movements of the Spanish Symphony, the orchestra's best work, were recorded, but the rich portamento, fine vibrato, and crisp staccato of Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Wieniawski's brilliant Polonaise are \"charming\" and \"stylish\" (cool). The rich portamento, fine vibrato, and sharp staccato of Schmaye's brilliant Polonaise and other pieces make Henry Wood's words, \"charming and stylish,\" come to life. This reissue of Schmay's performance alone is extremely rare, even internationally, and is a project unique to Biddulph.
