The title piece was written at the end of 1937, just before the Nazi regime of Germany annexed the Czech Republic and Austria. The last song, \"Under the Protection of Goodness,\" was written by Dietrich Bonheffer (1906-1945), a resistance poet who was executed as a political prisoner a few years later in April, just before the liberation of Germany by the Allied Forces.
