With this idea in mind, Les Arts Florissants, led by Agnew, has been recording cantatas in chronological order of composition. The second volume in this remarkable series is an early cantata from the Weimar period.

By the time he arrived in Weimar, he already knew that he and his wife Barbara were expecting their first child, and he must have felt responsible as the head of the family. Bach arrived in Weimar as organist and court musician. His first assignment as organist yielded a number of organ pieces, and as court musician, some unaccompanied violin works and harpsichord pieces. 1714 marked the beginning of a period of regular cantata compositions. The opening cantata, BWV 12, is his second work after his appointment. The opening chorale chorus, in the form of a chaconne with chromatic bass, is a famous piece that Liszt also arranged later in his career. Cantata No. 61 is an authentic French overture with dotted rhythms, for the Advent season, when people are waiting for Christ. The opening movement of Telemann's cantata TWV 1:1178, based on the same text, is also a French overture like Bach's BWV 61, but a little less ostentatious. By comparing it with Telemann's work, we can again realize that Bach was influenced by other composers and that he was composing within the community of musicians of his time.

Throughout, the soft and beautiful performances of the members of the Les Arts Florissants orchestra are impressive. The singers also sing in a manner that is more telling than dramatic, and the text is outstanding.

HARMONIA MUNDI

Tracklisting:

1.
