It is Smythe's only large-scale religious work, a Mass in D major and D minor composed for a concert hall rather than a church, in which the liturgical texts of the Mass are sung by four solo singers and a choir, but the second piece, \"Gloria,\" is placed last instead of after the \"Kyrie\" (second) according to the composer's instructions.
