Details
The legendary live performance by Pink Floyd, recorded at the Pompeii ruins in Italy in 1971, has been restored from the original 35mm film and digitally remastered in 4K, and the audio has been newly remixed for 2025 by Stephen Wilson (Porcupine Tree). the definitive version of 'Pink Floyd at Pompeii' will be reborn as the ultimate final form.
The new version of “Pink Floyd at Pompeii” will be released on May 2nd, 2025 in 2CD, 2LP, Blu-ray, DVD, digital audio and Dolby Atmos formats (the first release in vinyl and Dolby Atmos format). In addition, a limited edition 3-disc set (2CD + BD) in a 7-inch paper jacket (with bonus poster) will also be released in Japan. The 2CD and 2LP versions will also include the bonus tracks “Eugene, Beware of the Axe” (alternate take) and “Mysterious” (unedited version).
'Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII' will be released for the first time as a newly restored 4K version of the film released in 1972, directed by Adrian Mayben. Pink Floyd's live performance in October 1971 at the 'amphitheatre' of the ancient Roman 'World Heritage Site' Pompeii ruins in Italy, set against the impressive and beautiful ruins, featured extremely important songs such as “Echoes”, “Mysteries” and “Blow Wind, Call Storm”, and the breathtaking visuals that captured the amphitheater both in the daytime and at night further emphasized the magic of the performance. This was the first concert ever to be held at the Pompeii ruins. The film also includes rare behind-the-scenes footage, including scenes from the recording of the classic 'The Dark Side of the Moon' album at Abbey Road Studios, and is a valuable record of Pink Floyd just before the release of the classic album and just before they became a huge presence (the MCMLXXII in the English title 'Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII' is the Roman numeral for 1972).
Nick Mason, drummer for Pink Floyd, said, “Pink Floyd at Pompeii is a rare and unique record of the band's live performance before ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’.”
The footage to be released this time was discovered in five film cans from Pink Floyd's own archives, and was carefully restored frame by frame by hand from the original 35mm negatives. The original film, which was shot over 50 years ago in the sweltering heat of the Pompeii ruins, has been unearthed. The mission of the team led by Pink Floyd restoration director Lana Topham was to preserve the original footage in all its perfect beauty. The film was scanned in 4K using advanced technology to ensure the highest quality and finest detail. The colors were made more vivid, and each frame was carefully inspected and restored, with corrections made at the microscopic particle level to bring back the natural, vivid image.
Speaking about 'Pink Floyd at Pompeii', Lana Topham said, “Since 1994, I've been searching for the unedited film of ‘Pink Floyd at Pompeii’, so it was a tremendously special event to discover the original 35mm negatives from 1972 recently. The newly restored version combines the original 90-minute cut with a 60-minute source edit, and also includes documentary footage shot at Abbey Road Studios shortly afterwards.”
The sound has also been upgraded tremendously, with Steven Wilson's 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mix for cinema and home entertainment emphasizing depth and clarity while preserving the true spirit of the original 1972 release. Steven Wilson's aim was to faithfully recreate the sound that they would have made in those scorching days of 1971. Steven Wilson added:
“Since I was a child, I was brainwashed by my father, who was on the verge of going insane, and Pink Floyd has been my favorite band ever since. They are my 'Beatles', and are deeply engraved in my musical DNA. I first saw 'Pompeii' in a local cinema, in a grainy image. The liberating and exploratory rock music of the four musicians, who seemed to embody the concepts of intelligence and coolness, made a great impression on me. I am honored to have been able to remix the soundtrack to accompany Lana Topham's wonderful film restoration, which looks as if it was filmed yesterday.
The legendary Pink Floyd Pompeii concert is reborn in the highest quality ever. It will be remembered as the ultimate, definitive version.
