He studied at the Berlin Conservatory with Schreker and graduated with a thesis on Mahler, but he was a hot-blooded fighter, protesting against his Nazi-loving professors, married a niece of Kafka, and became an assistant to Bruno Walter, composing and conducting like Mahler, before finally being forced by the Nazis to leave before World War II. He also founded the Bombay Chamber Music Society with his friend Mehri Mehta (father of Zubin Mehta, who had visited Japan with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra), and was a benefactor to the Indian classical music world. He aimed to combine the West and the East musically, and \"Madras Express,\" recorded here, is regarded as one of his masterpieces.
