According to family lore, the second theme of the first movement is said to reflect the image of Anna Bratsenskaya (then the wife of his brother Emil), who would later become Metner’s wife. The subsequent “Sonata Triad (Sonata Trilogy), Op. 11” is a triptych dedicated to the memory of Anna’s brother, Andrei. In the second piece, the “Sonata-Elegy,” allusions to “Dies Irae” are subtly woven in, expressing an internalized memory of death. The final piece on the album, the “Piano Sonata in G Minor, Op. 22,” is dedicated to Georgi Katov.
