His father is a Catalan lawyer and his mother is French, born to a family of bell-makers in Tarbes in southern France. Montpauw studied piano from an early age, and at the age of nine was so moved by a Fauré performance in Barcelona that he set his sights on becoming a professional pianist. However, his overly shy nature led him to abandon his career as a performer to devote himself to composing, and he was ultimately successful in doing so. The cover of the booklet is a drawing of a bird by Montpauw. While his elder brother Josep was a sophisticated Fauvist painter, the paintings of his younger brother Federico, who called himself a primitivist, are as simple and unique as his music.
