Born in Australia, he spent most of his career in England, where he served as principal conductor of the English National Opera and made numerous guest appearances with major orchestras and operas around the world.\n\nMackerras is especially noted for his interpretations of Janacek, Dvořák, and Mozart. Based on his intimate knowledge of the original sources and the performance customs of the time, his performances shed new light on familiar works. His discography is very extensive, encompassing a wide variety of repertoire and winning numerous awards. In addition to being an accomplished conductor, he is also an accomplished musicologist and has revised several operas.His accomplishments are marked by a seriousness about music and a passion for attracting audiences and performers alike.\n\nThis set includes much of Mackerras' recording legacy spanning more than 60 years, from his 1951 recording debut \"Pineapple Pole\" to one of the outstanding opera recordings of his later years, \"Idomeneo. His activities encompass not only the repertoire in which he excelled, but also a wide range of works. While widely recognized as an authority on Handel, Mozart, Sullivan, and Czech music (especially Dvořák and Janáček), he also demonstrated his mastery of Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Mahler, British and Russian music, ballet, and light orchestral works. Since 1990, he has introduced the natural trumpet and horn into modern orchestras, and conducted the Age of Inquiry Orchestra, a period instrument orchestra, in performances of Schubert and Mendelssohn that showcase his strong desire to study these works. The recording was made in 1976.
