The Bahia-born pianist Marcelo Gartel played an active role in the quintet led by Lechieres as a close associate of Lechieres. In this, his debut album, he uses a traditional jazz piano trio as a base, but with two percussionists in place of a drummer. Backed by a colorful and close-knit ensemble, the piano is sometimes lyrical and sometimes abstract.Although it lacks the explosive festivity that one generally associates with Afro-Brazilian music, the microcosmic ensemble evoked by its mellow rhythms and the piano harmoniously blending influences from giants such as Thelonious Monk, Messiaen, and Dorival Caymmi, exudes a strong Afro-Brazilian quality. The liner notes were contributed by his mentor, Lechieres Reichi. In the beginning of the liner notes, he describes the album as \"the realization of my dream of a totally original Afro-Brazilian piano,\" which shows how epoch-making this album was.
