The story is based on an Austrian legend introduced by Heinrich Heine: \"Daughters who die before their marriage become the fairy Willi and make a man who wanders into the forest dance until he dies. The bright daytime forest in the first act is transformed into a dark and lonely night forest in the second act, where the dancing fairies wear a mysterious sadness. Giselle, the heroine, is a sickly girl who loves to dance, and Hilarion, the young forest keeper, secretly loves Giselle. Giselle's feelings for Albrecht are never fulfilled, and she dies and is welcomed into the company of the fairy Wili. Giselle is beautiful as she dances in white in the forest at night. This is the highlight of the story. There are many interpretations of the story, but this Royal Opera House performance is true to the spirit of the premiere and is refreshingly free of any forced reinterpretations. Natalia Osipova as Giselle is a marvel to behold, with a wonderful dance that is both dainty and strong.
