Poulenc's Sonata is dedicated to Lorca, who lost his life in the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The second movement opens with a portion of Lorca's poem. The centerpiece of the album is \"Old Spanish Songs,\" taken from Lorca's own collection, and here six songs selected from the collection have been arranged for violin and piano by Malaga-born pianist-arranger Martín Díaz. As Diaz says, \"I gave each song a different style and personality,\" and the pieces range in style from romantic to pop to contemporary. Tersian's \"Lorca Songbook\" offers a glimpse of the great poet's influence on Hispanic Americans. Other works include those by Falla, who was a close friend of Lorca's, and Arn, whose maternal ancestors were Spanish. Ana Maria Valderrama, the winner of the 11th Pablo Sarasate International Violin Competition in 2011 and a violin professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid since 2013, is the virtuoso violinist who will perform on the program.
