He broadened his musical horizons and in 1716 was appointed court conductor to Augustus, \"the Strong King\" of Dresden. He left more than 20 religious cantatas in German, but they vary widely. Some have austere chorale movements, others are gorgeous arias reminiscent of opera, and still others are lyrical and idyllic in their depiction of nature, with soloists, chorus, and orchestra working in unison.
