Description:

The #bruckner2024 project, an initiative of the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record all 18 versions of Bruckner's 11 symphonies, features the acclaimed Seventh Symphony, a masterpiece. The newly revised edition and the highly refined performance by Poschner and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra are also noteworthy. The #bruckner2024 received a special "Spcecial Achivement Award" from the ICMA (International Classical Music Award) 2024 and was praised for "rethinking our habitual ways of listening and what we regard as tradition. No. 7 uses a newly revised edition by Paul Hawkshaw (NBG III/1: 7, unpublished as of February 2024). Highly praised by Artur Nikisch and Hermann Levy as "the most important symphony written after Beethoven's death," etc., No. 7 has only one manuscript due to its early success. However, the autograph manuscript in the National Library of Vienna (Mus. Hs 19479/1-3) contains a number of additions and changes made between the completion of the work in September 1883 and the engraving for printing in 1885, which has posed a challenge in deciphering the final form intended by the composer. Haas had a very good idea of what the piece should have looked like when it was first completed. Haas has eliminated later additions, including some by Bruckner himself, in order to preserve the original form of the music, while Nowak has included additions (often in parentheses) after careful selection, including those made by persons other than Bruckner. Hawkshaw, the chief editor of the new Bruckner cycle and supervisor of #bruckner2024, wrote in the original CD commentary (in English and German) that he tried to include everything in the above-mentioned autograph score that was either written or approved by Bruckner himself (the second movement climaxes with (Cymbals and triangles are used effectively in the climax of the second movement). (Cymbals and triangles are used to great effect in the climax of the second movement.) Although we will have to wait for the publication of the score and the revision report for more details, we believe that there are several performance options presented in some parts of the score. Poschner and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra's performance was as usual, with a fast tempo as the basis, but with detailed manipulation according to the musical theme, and a slow movement that took its time to weave a prayer-like lyricism, resulting in a well-balanced appearance of the piece as a whole. The dynamics of each phrase, the tempo, and the tempo of each phrase are all well balanced. The dynamics, tempo, and rhythm of each phrase are carefully examined and rendered with extremely high precision, resulting in music that flows well and is resilient, without being cumbersome or suffocating. This is not the style of the great masters of the past with its thick sound and slow tempo, nor the period style with its slim sound and accentuated accents, but a performance that makes full use of the high functionality of a modern orchestra to bring the music to life with delicacy and precision. Poschner recorded eleven symphonies (seventeen drafts in total) in the three years from 2021, except for No. 8 (second draft), which was recorded in 2018, and both the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Linz Bruckner Orchestra improved their "reading skills" as they worked with rarely performed drafts and new revisions of the scores. The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Linz Bruckner Orchestra, both of which were responsible for the performance, have improved their "reading skills" in working with rarely performed manuscripts and newly revised scores, and there is a sense that the composer's language has become more widespread. The remaining four pieces in this series are the study in F minor, No. 1 (second draft), No. 3 (second draft), and No. 9. The series is scheduled to be released every month from now on, and the completion of the series is in sight. The domestic edition will come with a Japanese commentary by Yutaro Ishihara (musicology/member of the International Bruckner Society).
