Description:

Paderewski's only opera "Manl," first recorded in German! Ulana falls in forbidden love with Manl, a young Roma, but is rejected by both her mother and the village. Ulana and Manl leave the village to wander with the Roma and have a child together, but Ulana faces many hardships. Originally, the play ends with this scene, but Paderewski later changed the ending to have Oros, who has lost his lover Aasa, throw Manl into the lake in revenge (this is the ending used in this performance). Paderewski was a pianist and composer, and also served as prime minister of the Second Republic of Poland, which was established after World War I. This is his only opera. This album contains his only complete opera "Manl".The work, with its theme of racial discrimination and elements of Hungarian and Polish folk songs, was premiered on May 29, 1901 at the Dresden Court Opera under the baton of Ernst von Schiff, who had premiered several of Richard Strauss's operas. It was translated into Polish and performed in Lwów (now Lviv) on June 8 of the same year, and in Warsaw the following year. At the premiere, Ulana was sung by Annie Krull, who also sang the title role in "Elektra. In 1902, it was performed at the Metropolitan Opera House, and became the only Polish opera ever performed there. Unfortunately, it was never performed in the United States. In Poland, the opera was performed in 1930, in Poznań and Warsaw in 1961 to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Paderewski's birth, and in Wroclaw Opera House in 2001.This production at the Halle Opera House is in the original German, with Romelia Lichtenstein, the Opera's prima donna, and Thomas Moll, an outstanding Heldenten tenor, in the leading roles, and Michael Wendeberg, the overall conductor, bringing out the best in the work!
