Schubert's songs have always had an intimate atmosphere, but these arrangements make them sound as good in today's huge halls and require even greater expressiveness from the singers. Apple has sung Wolff's orchestral versions of songs before (cpo 555380), and she is no stranger to orchestral versions of songs, and she meets these demands with a fine voice in this recording. The arrangements by various composers, including Reger, are also worth listening to.
