Carl Stamitz, whose father was Johann Stamitz, a central figure of the Mannheim School of Music that contributed greatly to the development of instrumental music in the German-speaking world between the late Baroque and the Viennese Classical School, also played the violin and viola d'amore himself, and traveled extensively throughout Europe to make a name for himself. This collection of 14 trios was published in London at a time when this talented composer, a contemporary of Boccherini and Cimarosa, was trying to extend his growing fame to the UK and Holland. The original score was written for flute, violin, and cello (or two violins and cello), and there are no figures in the bass clef, but the keyboard instrument was a favorite of English and Dutch music lovers, and paintings of the period frequently depict people playing chamber music with the harpsichord added. The harpsichord was also a popular instrument for music lovers in England and Holland.
