The Facade was composed in 1922 for a poetry reading by his friend's sister, Edith Sitwell. Walton put on comical and vital music, as if to blow away the anxious pre-World War II climate. Although the two suites are now often performed by orchestra, they were originally written for instrumental ensemble and recitation. On this album, baritone Roderick Williams partners with Tamsin Darey to speak the entire work as if he were singing it. Also from 1944 is \"Henry V,\" a film made to boost national morale while Britain was at its worst because of World War II. Walton's dramatic music is haunting. The version on this album is arranged by Edward Watson for a small 11-piece ensemble, but the sound is as impactful as that of a large orchestra.
