Description:

Unknown Passion discovered by Letzball, a great work reminiscent of Haydn's "On the Cross". This is the Passion Oratorio by Franz Josef Aumann, which Letzborg himself found in the archives of St. Florian's Abbey and other monasteries. Although the title is in Latin, it is a Catholic Passion in German, and was probably performed at St. Florian Abbey on Good Friday at the time. The performance lasts about two hours, and rather than following the story of Christ's Passion, the focus is on the emotional development of the incomprehensible "death on the cross. Reminiscent of Haydn's "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" and other works, this is very expressive music in the early classical period. Bold harmony enlivens the expression, and a complex fugue makes Christ's suffering and sorrow sound impressive. Franz Josef Aumann was born in 1728 in Traismauer, Austria, and studied music in Vienna, where he met many important musicians of the time. 1753 he moved to St. Florian, where he became a priest a few years later and served the monastery until his death in 1797.
