Description:
40 years of history and an eye toward the future. The 18 artists currently on the label will cover classic songs from the past, and the prestigious 4AD will release a gorgeous memorial album. The prestigious "4AD", founded in 1980 as a sister label of "Beggars Banquet Records", has continued to lead the world's indie scene, producing leading acts of each era in its 40-year history. The monumental work "Bills & Aches & Blues" is a compilation of the label's history and future outlook. The concept of this album was to bring new life to the music by having 18 of the label's current artists select and cover their favorite songs from the catalog over the past 40 years. As fans of the past will recognize, there is a wonderful chemistry between the artists and the songs on the 18 tracks on this compilation, which bear the lyrics to the Cocteau Twins' classic "Cherry-Colored Funk. The earliest song is The Birthday Party's "Junkyard" from 1981, chosen by U.S. Girls, and the most recent are two 2012 Grimes songs covered by Spencer and Dry Cleaning, respectively. Current signees Big Thief, Bradford Cox, and Tune Yards all cover the Breeders, bridging 4AD's past and present, as does Dis Mortal Coil's legendary cover of Tim Buckley's "Song To The Siren. The genes of Buckley's legendary cover of "Song To The Siren" by Dis Mortal Coil (a pre-Buckley "Starsailor" acoustic version) have been beautifully carried over to Song. Newly signed and upcoming releases by Ellard Negro, Maria Somerville, and Becky and the Byrds also unearth the label's deep history, while the Pixies' classic "Gigantic" is transformed by Bing and Loose into a radical piano instrumental version. The Pixies classic "Gigantic" is transformed into a radical piano instrumental version by Bing and Loose. The result is a creative memorial album that truly embodies "FORWARD=FWD=4AD=forward," which is also the origin of the <4AD> label's name. Proceeds from the first 12 months of the album will be donated to The Harmony Project, a Los Angeles-based after-school program for children in communities and schools where art and music are not available.
