After completing a six-volume collection of Brahms's works for solo piano, Douglas, who has received worldwide acclaim for his mature expression, is now working on a collection of Schubert's works for piano. Volume 6 features two major works. The Sonata in A minor (D845) was completed in 1825, just before Schubert began work on his symphony \"The Great\". Again, Schubert pushed the limits of the sonata form, especially in terms of the harmonic variations introduced throughout the piece. The \"Four Improvisations,\" published after Schubert's death, was composed in 1827 and, like the sonata, exhibits all the trademarks of the late Schubert.As in the previous five volumes, the piano used is a Steinway Model D (541 687) concert grand piano from the CIT Cork School of Music (Ireland), where Barry Douglas is artist-in-residence.
