SACD hybrid disc. Austrian-Scottish composer Hans Gal was born in 1890 to an Eastern European Jewish family in Brun am Gebirge, near Vienna. He studied counterpoint and form with Eusebius Mandichevski, a musicologist and close friend of Brahms, and achieved success as a composer in the 1920s with works including his second opera, Die heilge Ente (The Sacred Duck). In 1929, he was appointed director of the music school in Mainz, but was dismissed in 1933 with the rise of the Nazis. In 1945, Donald Tovey invited him to Edinburgh to take a position as a university lecturer, where he remained active as a conductor, pianist, and musicologist until his death in Edinburgh in 1987. He wrote operas, orchestral works and concertos, including four symphonies, large-scale cantatas, chamber music, piano music, and vocal music, and approximately 140 works have been published.Sixty-seven of Gull's solo compositions are said to be extant. Most of them were written between about 1910 and 1916, following what he called his \"apprentice years,\" two years of private study with Mandiczewski. In 1929, after repeated requests, Simrock published his \"Five Songs,\" a collection of five songs composed between 1917 and 1921. This album on the BIS label includes the \"Five Songs\" and 26 previously unpublished songs composed between 1910 and 1921. The texts are by Hermann Hesse, Carl Busse, Heinrich Heine, Eduard Mehrke, Max Dautendei, Walter von der Vogelweide, Friedrich Adler, Otto Julius Bierbaum, and Richard Demel, Christian Morgenstern, Rabindranath Tagore, and C. H. von Hofmanswaldau, as well as Chinese poetry translated into German by Hans Beethge. The diversity of themes and styles of these poems is the inspiration for his work. The melody and harmony are in the tradition of songs by composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, or Mahler and Richard Strauss. It is also noted that the writing style of the piano part has traces that seem to have been learned from the music of Schumann, Brahms, and even Grieg.
