Dean is also known as a virtuoso viola player and was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 14 years, but in recent years he has been focusing on composing. Voices of Angels\" is a two-movement work that was premiered in 1996 by the renowned British pianist Imogen Cooper and the musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic, including Dean. The composition was inspired by the first poem of a series of poems, \"Duino's Dirge,\" by Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926).
