Later, while working as a music critic for the Los Angeles Times, he established a music department at Loyola Marymount University, where he befriended composers such as Stravinsky, Milhaud, Villa-Lobos, and Chavez. While working as a critic, he took a break from composing, but resumed composing after retiring as a journalist in the 1980s. Most of Ahlen's works, primarily for voice and piano, express his feelings about his experiences during the Holocaust, including his escape from Austria, the deaths of family members in concentration camps, and the suicide of several family members, and he gained recognition as a composer in his later years when his works were performed publicly for the first time in 2008.
