He also showed his talent as a teacher, and left his name as a teacher of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff. In his lifetime, Taneyev was widely known as a theorist of counterpoint, and the two pieces recorded here make the best use of his talent. The String Trio, Op. 31, was originally written for violin, viola, and tenor viola, an unusual configuration. The tenor viola is an instrument shaped like a large viola and tuned lower than a regular viola. The first performance was given on this instrument, but since the instrument itself has fallen into disuse, it is now played by a trio of violin, viola, and cello. The bright first movement in a classical form, the uplifting second movement, the slow third movement with a hymn-like melody, and the lively last movement are enlivened by the occasional appearance of the material from the first movement. The Piano Quartet in E major, Op. 20, features a piano part that could only have come from the virtuosity of the famous pianist Taneyev. The first movement is colored with passionate motifs, the second movement is beautifully melodic, and the last movement is a masterpiece of Taneyev's signature counterpoint technique.Spectrum Concerts Berlin is an ensemble founded in 1988 by American cellist Frank Sumner Dodge.
