As a young man, he worked as an assistant to Franz Liszt, where he honed his orchestration skills before establishing himself as an independent symphonic composer. A talented pianist, he also wrote many piano pieces, but he also showed interest in the violin, writing more than 20 works, including the best-known \"Cavatina\". His ambitious first violin sonata was completed around 1853, but Ruff's love for the violin was immeasurable, as he composed several smaller works before that, all of which were highly praised by Sarasate. Composed in 1858, Raff's second piece further established his own style, and was very popular as soon as it was premiered in 1862. The Swiss violinist Lorons Kayaley gives a sympathetic performance of this charming work, which is full of beautiful melodies.
