However, when he was 14, his father’s transportation business was accused of involvement in fraudulent activities, and the family moved to Vienna. There, he became close with musicians who were active in Vienna at the time. Although he was the same age as Schoenberg, he never ventured into avant-garde music throughout his life and consistently adhered to the late Romantic style. This Symphony No. 2 was composed between 1911 and 1912 and premiered in Vienna the following year. Dedicated to Franz Schalk, it was considered one of the “most technically demanding symphonies” of its time, largely due to its string orchestration. It is an irresistible work for those who love the sound of a large orchestra, and the first movement takes on a dramatic tone right from the opening—which features the second violins and clarinets—and the occasional surging roars of the brass even bring to mind a passage from *The Book of the Seven Seals*. Above all, the defining feature of this piece is undoubtedly the lengthy set of variations in the second movement. The rare “Fuga Solemnis” is also an incredibly impressive work.
