This album includes three works from his student days, the Marimba Concerto, to the recently written Oboe Concerto. While a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music, Putz collaborated with marimba player Makoto Nakura to write the \"Marimba Concerto\" in 1997. The opening melody in E-flat major is said to be modeled on Mozart's E-flat major piano concerto, which he loves, and is decorated by the marimba. In the second movement, the marimba sings elegantly accompanied by strings, and in the third movement, the melody of the first movement returns in an intense dance, bringing the whole piece together. The City is a collaborative work with Carnegie Hall inspired by the city of Baltimore, a kaleidoscope of the city's many facets, including the mayhem caused by the \"death of Freddie Gray\" in April 2015, which Putz remembers in the wake of the 2016 presidential election The \"Oboe Concerto,\" which is based on his impression of the movie \"Moonlight,\" which resolved the turmoil and deep disillusionment that he felt in the wake of the 2016 presidential election, is Putz's current thoughts and feelings.
