Later in life, he developed a deep interest in County Kerry, Ireland, where his ancestors had lived. Moran's only symphony is said to reflect his impressions of these places.It is characterized by the delicate harmony and dynamic orchestration inherited from his teacher Iceland, and while influenced by Irish and Norfolk folk songs, it has a tragic character, with timpani playing an active role throughout the entire work. The recording is a performance by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Boult at the Royal Albert Hall on February 9, 1949. The Violin Concerto is a work with a strong Celtic flavor, with influences from Irish nature, festivals, and fiddle culture.The violin soloist is Moran's trusted friend Albert Sammons, and according to the label, this April 28, 1946 performance is Sammons' last public performance of the concerto and his only live recording.
