His interpretations of the works were thoroughly worked out and rehearsed until he was satisfied with the sound, resulting in performances of the highest degree of perfection, while at the same time possessing a burnt-out quality unique to live performances. Although Celibidacke, with his unique phenomenology-influenced reasoning, always insisted that his music could not be conveyed in recordings, he agreed to broadcast recordings, and many music fans and musicians around the world have been deeply impressed by his performances. This CD is one such broadcast recording, recorded live in a broadcast studio. The two pieces chosen for performance are two of Celibidacke's favorites, and the program is full of contrasts: Haydn with its delicacy and transparency, and the dramatic Tchaikovsky with its wide range of slow and fast dynamics. Although the tempi are not as extremely slow as in his later performances with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the grand introduction in the first movement of the Haydn and the eerie timpani rhythms in the middle section of the second movement of the Tchaikovsky show the character of Celibidacke. The explosive power of the fortissimo is also typical of Celli in his prime. The sound has been remastered from the master tapes owned by SWR, and although it is in monaural, it is very easy to listen to. In June 1971, Celibidacke conducted the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra's 25th anniversary concert of Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 to great acclaim, and from 1972 to 1977 he was the orchestra's de facto chief conductor, raising the orchestra to one of the highest levels in Germany.
