He studied composition and music theory at the Moscow Conservatory under Anton Arensky and Sergei Taneyev. He studied with Woldemar Barguil. His early works show the influence of German Romanticism, and he was called \"Russian Brahms\" by his fellow countryman Rachmaninoff, but his style gradually shifted to more complex rhythms and melodies, and his works became more difficult to understand. This album contains works accompanied by the viola. The two viola sonatas, which were composed more than 20 years apart, show the transition of Huon's style, although the deep, austere tone of these works certainly has a Brahmsian sound. The viola player, Vendriès, is a veteran player, having served as principal violist of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and having given recitals in New York, London, and Tokyo as a member of the Aurora Quartet from 1986 to 1995. He is currently an avid educator and mentor to younger musicians.
