While a diplomat by profession, he became director of music at St. Mary's Cathedral in Hamburg in 1715, a position he held for 13 years despite suffering from hearing loss, during which time he composed 24 oratorios for feast days. This oratorio, Joseph, written in German, was premiered in 1727 under Matthison's direction. His works, a fusion of religious music and theatrical styles, were all demanding on the vocal parts, and it was no mean feat to sing them. The performances on this album are performed by a small vocal ensemble and an ancient instrument orchestra. Merkner's plaintive voice as Josef and the vigorous instrumental ensemble are appealing.
