Her older sister is Leila McCalla, who has already made her debut as a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and as a solo artist. She grew up with music from an early age and began playing classical violin and piano at the age of 8 in music camp and conservatory classes. Later, she moved to New Orleans with her older sister to pursue her music career in earnest. He absorbed Motown, Bob Marley, the Beatles, and Haitian folk music to create his own unique music.
