Anohni, a British-born, New York-based artist, releases her latest album under the name Anohni and the Johnsons, My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross, on <rough trade>, her first album since 2016's masterpiece, HOPELESSNESS The creative process was painful, yet inspirational, joyful, and intimate, and she describes it as a new response to and interpretation of the world as she sees it. She says, "I thought a lot about Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On.' That was a very important benchmark for me. Some of the songs on the album are responses to concerns about the earth and the environment that were first raised in popular music more than 50 years ago, but in a very present sense." Anohni says of the album. 2022, Anohni began working with Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Tina Turner), noting his sensitivity to soul music. This was the first such collaboration for Annoni, who had written and produced his own music on previous albums under the Johnsons' name. Anohni brought in a notebook full of lyric ideas and created a series of demo recordings set to Hogarth's guitar and her own piano.Hogarth then assembled a studio band that included Leo Abrahams, Chris Vatalaro, Sam Dixon, and string arranger Rob Moose to record the album. Hogarth's intuitive guitar leads the listener through ten songs, touching on elements of American soul, British folk, and experimental music. There is a great tenderness, melody, and dissonance that coexist. By giving form to a wide range of themes, the album expresses the state of the world today. Through a personal lens, Annoni explores the loss of loved ones, inequality, alienation, acceptance, cruelty, environmental destruction, the devastation wrought by the Abrahamic religions (*the three religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam that purport to inherit the God of the Biblical prophet Abraham), and futuristic feminism, and a variety of other themes, such as the intention that our way of thinking, our spirituality, our social structure, and our relationship with nature may yet be changed.</rough>

Tracklisting:

.It Must Change
.Go Ahead
.Sliver of Ice
.Can't
.Scapegoat
.It's My Fault
.Rest
.There Wasn't Enough
.Why Am I Alive Now?
.You Be Free
