Ballets Russes, the ballet company that revolutionized music, dance, and the visual arts, was founded in 1909 by Russian-born artistic producer Sergei Diaghilev at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris. Innovative and flamboyant, it brought together the most talented composers, dancers, choreographers, and designers with a genius for fostering creativity and energizing audiences. Emblematic of the influence of the Ballets Russes was the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. It caused an infamous scandal, but also changed the course of musical history. This 22-CD set traces the path of the troupe's existence over two decades, a turbulent but artistically rich period, and includes all of the ballet music written for the Ballets Russes. Covering groundbreaking works and rarities, listeners will rediscover numerous masterpieces and groundbreaking interpretations by renowned performers of the 78rpm SP, LP, and digital eras. #1Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929): Diaghilev was an impresario who changed the history of music; March 31, 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Diaghilev, the flamboyant, visionary, and influential impresario who founded the legendary Ballets Russes.Diaghilev was born near Novgorod in northwestern Russia and grew up in the artistic environment of Perm.
