Description:
The first compilation of Markevich DG recordings from Eloquence, covering a wide range of repertoire. 21 CD setFor the first time, Igor Markevich's Deutsche Grammophon recordings made in Berlin, Paris, Prague and New York between 1953 and 1965 are being released together. 21 CD set. Limited edition. Markevich says, "I've recorded so much that I forget I've recorded myself! Markevich has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, HMV/EMI, Philips (the complete Philips recordings are available from Eloquence), and many other labels. The erudite Markevich switched from composing to conducting after World War II and soon became the most popular conductor of his era. He is well versed in a wide repertoire that includes classical symphonies by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven; Romantic narrative works by Berlioz, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky; and contemporary French composers such as Milhaud, Honegger, and Roussel, and he approaches each piece with a sharp edge. The orchestra's sharp approach to each piece brings a keen sense of color and harmony to the music. Many of Markevich's Deutsche Grammophon recordings were made in Paris with the Orchestre de la Concert Lamoureux, of which he was chief conductor from 1957 to 1961. Markevich is also best known internationally as a passionate performer of the Russian repertoire, and the virtuoso works here include Lyadov, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky. He also devoted himself to choral works, including Haydn's "The Creation," Mozart's "Coronation Mass" (recorded twice, once in Berlin and once in Paris), and the lesser-known Cherubini Requiem in D minor and Gounod's "Solemn Mass for St. Cecilia. 1960's Recorded in Prague with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in the early 1960s, these albums were Markevich's "swan song" for Deutsche Grammophon. In their original jackets, with a new essay by Peter Quantrill. Many of the recordings have long been unavailable on CD. Universal Music/IMS
