Galuppi (1706-1785)

Description:

[A long-lost masterpiece from the golden age of Venetian operetta is brought back to life with vibrant energy!] Le Poème Harmonique, conducted by Vincent Dumestore, has recorded the complete score of this little-known operetta by Garuppi—an opera composer who gained international renown based in Venice from the early to mid-18th century—in an exceptionally vibrant performance. Garuppi, who rose to prominence at the Teatro Sant’Angelo in Venice—almost as if to take Vivaldi’s place after the latter withdrew from opera composition and left for Vienna in the 1730s— After achieving success in London in his youth, he returned to Venice and, together with the brilliant contemporary playwright Carlo Goldoni, took the Venetian stage by storm, ushering in the golden age of comic opera in the city. *The Man in Women’s Clothing* was composed in 1762—shortly before he was invited by Catherine II to spend three years at the Russian court—and is a masterpiece that fully demonstrates his compositional skill as an opera composer, using flowing melodies to bring a rich, undulating narrative to life. The story begins when Roberto and Giannino wash ashore on an island where women rule and men, surrounded by them, are required to tend to their appearance. While the two men are astonished by these strange customs, Cassandra and Queen Cretidea—who discovered them—vymate over Roberto, and Cretidea’s favorite, Gersomino, is intensely jealous of Roberto while constantly preoccupied with his own appearance… This whimsical tale is woven together with music that straddles the Baroque and Classical eras, brimming with melodic beauty. The exuberance of the basso continuo, skillfully employing plucked instruments, and the dramatic singing of the soloists—led by the renowned singer Zaisik—are truly the result of Le Poème Harmonique’s rich experience. This complete recording is well worth listening to. Naxos Japan
