Description:

Zubin Mehta replaces Lorin Maazel, who died in July 2014. La Scala has presented two productions of "Aida," the historic 1963 version by master conductor Franco Zeffirelli and the magnificent 2006 version. Expectations are high for this new production after more than 10 years. Peter Stein, a native of Germany, is now one of the world's leading directors. He is an Italian citizen and has succeeded in presenting a "very intimate" Aida. This "Aida" was produced at a time when Verdi had established himself as an opera writer and created many masterpieces for posterity.Commissioned to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, this opera is a tale of tragic love between a man and a woman set in ancient Egypt, and is still a popular performance today. The "Triumphal March" is particularly famous and is often performed alone. The magnificent chorus and spectacular orchestration are the best part of the opera. Peter Stein's cool production focuses on the epic love story rather than on the pomp and circumstance. The set and costumes, a mix of Orientalism and futurism, are elegant enough to appeal to a La Scala audience accustomed to the opulence of "Aida. The soloists are all talented, from veterans to newcomers, and include Carlo Colombara, whose voice is full of weight, and Georgian-born Anita Rachvevaera, who is a member of the orchestra. Anita Rachvelishvili, a native Georgian, sings with a resilient voice and superb acting ability. The title role is sung by American soprano Christine Levis. Her voice is as strong as the orchestra and captivates the audience.Fabio Sartori as Radames also showed a beautiful and stable voice. The Meta's ability to put together a powerful performance that marks the unveiling of a new production is impressive. King International
