Description:
Pat Martino, a true legend and jazz guitar giant, new album! There have been reissues of previously unreleased and planned works, but this is the first leader work with a regularly active member in 11 years!!! Here is the long-awaited release of the new 2017 record, performed at the Cotton Club in May. In May, the band performed at the Cotton Club, where a full house of audiences of all ages gathered to hear a number of classic tunes from the past, and in September, they returned to Japan. At Tokyo Jazz, he was positioned as a featured artist in Lee Ritner's group, but that was enough to show the dignity of a master musician, and Ritner's deep respect for Martino was naturally brought out in a good performance. And this is the work that Martino himself said smilingly during his visit to Japan, "I've already finished this year, because I've also released a new album! The core of the band consists of Pat Bianchi on organ, who has been a member of the touring band for the past six years, and Carmen Intre Jr. on drums. Mingus's reverence for Ellington's music is evident in the ballad (M4), the romantic Ellington number (M8), and the Brubeck classic (M6), which is a masterpiece in itself! The sophistication of the harmonies and the richly emotional melodies of the solos are truly the music of an artist who has been cultivating his craft for a long time.On the other hand, on the other tracks, the two winds of Adam Niewood (tenor) and Alex Norris (trumpeter) join in for a thicker sound, which is also the charm of this album! The ensemble elements are also added, but the swingy, groove-filled rhythms and the superb phrases are not mechanical, but full of melody, as only Martino's virtuoso playing can deliver. Hank Mobley's blues on the shuffle rhythm is truly a performance in the jazz guitar tradition. Saxophonist Adam's father - Jerry Niewood's music (M3) has a psychedelic sound with a 70's atmosphere. But for fans, the most appealing aspect is Martino's own composition, a reprise of "El Ombre" from his debut album of the same title, which was recorded in 1967. Martino's soulful playing of beautiful phrases, interspersed with key riffs, as if they existed in a written score, is sure to move the listener's heart. He also plays three other songs: "Night Wings," the title track from his 1996 release, and, last but not least, "On the Stairs," which was included in 1974's "Consciousness. He suffered a fatal brain aneurysm caused by a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and underwent surgery in 1980, resulting in difficulties that have caused him to lose most of his memory to date. Even now, when asked about his life before that, Martino says calmly, "I don't remember anything from back then. But that is why, he says, "I don't think much about the past, let alone the future.I try to focus on the present moment." I try to focus on the "present" time. It is a pleasure to see such a new work that is alive and well in this day and age.
