The long-awaited new work by the Joachim Kühn New Trio, formed in 2015 and winner of the Best German Ensemble Award at the 2017 ECHO Jazz Awards! Joachim Kühn's trio with J.F. Jenny Clarke and Daniel Umer, formed in the mid-1980s, is by far the most famous trio in Europe, and is one of the pinnacle of radical improvisation and aesthetic sensibility, but the trio ended in 1998 due to J.F. Jenny Clarke's premature death. The trio ended in 1998 with the untimely death of J.F. Jenny Clarke. Since then, Kuehn had kept his activities in this format under wraps, but after discovering the young talents of Chris Jennings and Eric Schaeffer, he has resumed his piano trio activities, positioning it as the New Trio. According to Kuehn, "I played with Eric Schaeffer for 10 minutes and was immediately convinced that I wanted to play with him in the future. He felt the same way with Chris Jennings. In other words, this band is a trio that Kuehn himself has formed with great enthusiasm. As for the work, this is the second album recorded in about two years since "Beauty & Truth" (recorded in July 2015), which was released in early 2016. The basic line remains largely unchanged, with 11 tracks featuring Kuehn's own compositions as well as those of influential artists.The song "Night Plans" by Ornette Coleman, which they performed together for several years at the end of the 1990s and also featured on a Duo album, is played beautifully, both bewitchingly and romantically, which shows the depth of Keune's love for Ornette, and the Doors' The Doors' number again shows a certain decadent mood and sympathy for the artists of the same generation who pursued expression in the face of the turbulent times of the late 1960s. This time, however, the composition is more original than the previous one. As Kuehn says, "I wanted the new album to be short, concise, and simply melodic," and numbers such as M4, which even stirs nostalgia, seem to be performed in a different way from the past. The bluesy, country-tinged feel of the song, which is out of the good sense of the word, may be the age of the artist who has reached the age of 73 years old. M5, on the other hand, was composed on a plane from Barcelona to Vienna, as the title suggests, and it shows a unique development in which the royal phrasing of classical music intersects with a dark jazz sound. The album also includes one piece by each member. The different compositions of the two members are also noteworthy, with Schaeffer's melancholy piece contrasted with Jennings', who provides the swingsy intro to the song. In particular, Jennings' song on M8 shows a catchiness led by a bass solo, but as the performance progresses, it becomes more progressive and heated.The trio's improvisations also have the power to evoke the supple power of the trio's performance with Jenny Clark and Umer.
