He was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp, where he lived a turbulent life and was able to return to Paris after the liberation of the camp by the U.S. Army. Lax survived the ravages of the Great War and Nazi persecution, and his three string quartets composed after the war are performed here by the Polish Radio Amadeus Chamber Orchestra with a string orchestra.
